CROP GUIDE
Green pea is a cool-season legume crop cultivated mainly during the rabi season in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh. It is harvested at the green tender pod stage for vegetable use and fixes atmospheric nitrogen, benefiting subsequent crops.
- 1
Germination and Emergence
Day 0–8
Green pea seeds imbibe water, radicle and plumule emerge within 7–10 days, requiring moist, cool, well-drained soil.
- 2
Seedling and Vegetative Growth
Day 8–20
Seedlings establish primary roots and produce compound leaves, building canopy biomass through rapid vegetative shoot growth.
- 3
Tendril and Vine Development
Day 20–40
Tendrils extend and vines elongate, using support structures to climb while nodes increase and lateral branches form.
- 4
Flowering
Day 40–55
Self-pollinating white or purple flowers open at leaf axils; pollination occurs within the flower before it fully opens.
- 5
Pod Set and Development
Day 55–75
Fertilized ovaries swell into pods; seeds develop rapidly, accumulating sugars and starch over 15–20 days post-pollination.
- 6
Harvest Maturity
Day 75–90
Pods reach full size with bright-green, tender seeds at peak sugar content; delayed harvest causes seed starch hardening.
