CROP GUIDE
Groundnut is a major oilseed and legume crop grown predominantly in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. It fixes atmospheric nitrogen, improves soil fertility, and requires well-drained sandy loam soils for pod development underground.
- 1
Germination and Emergence
Day 0–10
Groundnut seeds germinate and pegs begin to develop as the hypocotyl arch pushes cotyledons above the soil surface.
- 2
Vegetative Growth
Day 10–30
Groundnut produces main stem branches and trifoliate leaves, establishing leaf area needed for photosynthesis and flowering.
- 3
Flowering
Day 30–50
Groundnut produces yellow flowers on lower branches; only soil-proximate flowers produce viable pegs after fertilization.
- 4
Peg Formation and Penetration
Day 50–70
Fertilized groundnut ovaries elongate downward as gynophores (pegs) and penetrate the soil to deposit developing pods.
- 5
Pod Development
Day 70–100
Groundnut pods swell underground as seeds accumulate oil and protein, with pod dry weight increasing rapidly.
- 6
Maturation and Harvest
Day 100–120
Groundnut pods reach full size, seed moisture drops, and inner pod wall darkens as the crop approaches harvest maturity.
