CROP GUIDE
Masoor, commonly known as red lentil, is a cool-season pulse crop widely grown in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal during the rabi season. It is highly nutritious, drought-tolerant, and an important source of dietary protein for Indian households.
- 1
Germination and Emergence
Day 0–8
Masoor lentil seeds absorb moisture, radicle emerges within 5–7 days, and seedlings push through soil in cool conditions.
- 2
Seedling Development
Day 8–20
Cotyledons unfold and primary leaves expand, anchoring the root system while the plant establishes early photosynthetic capacity.
- 3
Vegetative Growth
Day 20–50
Branching increases, pinnate leaves expand, and nitrogen fixation begins via root nodules, building biomass for reproductive growth.
- 4
Flowering
Day 50–70
Small self-fertile flowers form in leaf axils; successful pollination is critical for pod number and ultimately seed yield.
- 5
Pod Formation and Filling
Day 70–95
Pods elongate and seeds fill with protein and starch; assimilates are remobilized from leaves and stems into developing seeds.
- 6
Maturation and Harvest
Day 95–110
Foliage senesces, pods dry and turn tan, seed moisture drops to ~14%, and plants are harvested to prevent shattering.
